Dear members and colleagues;
Welcome to the first CTASTD newsletter of 2007. First let me say I feel privileged to have been voted in as president for the remainder of our fiscal year and I promise I will give 110% to the job. The board and I agree that we must move forward and present you with reinvigorated programming, professional support and networking opportunities that make a difference to you and in your development as Connecticut's training professionals.

The buzz-word at National is CERTIFICATION! Are you aware of how certification can build your credibility as a training professional? Certification has caught on and if you are not working on getting your credentials, you may find yourself on the outside looking in. We just mailed out a survey to the membership, (for those we had up-to-date emails ) because we are honestly looking for your input. This is your chapter and you should be getting out of it the things you need to operate like a professional. We asked questions like, “What attracts you to meetings?”, and “Why have you not been going to meetings?” because we want to create programs that you find up building, informative and mostly useful. That’s right, we want to be able to answer that question, “What’s in it for me (WIFM), for you. Please don’t ignore the survey, this is your chance to tell us what you want. We can’t guarantee that we will please everyone; but we sure can get to the majority the services they expect. If you failed to get the survey, you can download it and send it back to us from this website. Here is the information:

The ASTD has many publications useful to the professional trainer,
both young and mature in the trade.

"It is not the oath that makes us believe the man,  but the man the oath."
- Aeschylus

Once again it is character that stands out in front if we are to succeed. Today we live in a world that seems completely opposite from our quote here. People generally over-sell and under-deliver. It has become an age of words. If we can string them together impressively enough we can make believers out of some, so many take short cuts and learn to play the roles. Sadly, that is all that is usually required since no one really expects anyone to back up what they are saying. We have become a generation born to market ourselves. In sales we spend time at learning the sales pitch, but do we care if the product stands up? In court witnesses say what wants to be heard by the Lawyers. We learn to play the roles but never stop to learn to develop the needed character traits to succeed. But truly successful people can see right through that! They are interested in others who have developed skills necessary to handle situations and encourage trust and belief. In their minds, the man who has character keeps an oath. The rest are just con-men. Just ask a job Recruiter? Once again our authors have helped us see that self-empowerment is attained by developing character.–

Cyreous Quotes from John Cyr

Members come from more than 100 countries and connect locally in 140 U.S. chapters, with the Connecticut Chapter (CTASTD) being one of them.

The Connecticut Chapter has had a membership base of nearly 300, but because of recent downsizing trends and companies spending less on training, membership has dwindled over the last few years. However, as the economy picks up and organizations are restructured, a whole new crop of trainers is arising in CT and a strong need for them to meet and organize is also growing, something which Mr. Cyr recognizes.

After fourteen years of training for other organizations, Mr. Cyr struck out on his own in 2006 starting a training/consulting business called Arete Consulting and Training Services (ACTS). His business focuses on soft people skill training such as customer service, sales, self-empowerment, and workforce development training, and a train the trainer course called TL Facilitation which will be the topic of the Chapter’s February’s monthly meeting.

“Mr.Cyr’s energy and enthusiasm for his work as a trainer makes him a good candidate to lead this chapter”, said Marc Povell, ASTD’s National Division Coach on a recent visit to Connecticut.  The Board’s unanimous decision to choose Mr. Cyr as President demonstrated their confidence in John as their new leader. “My plans are to take this organization to new plateaus,” said Cyr when interviewed Friday. “We are going to reach out to both trainers and the workplace community as never before. We are going to work harder at establishing value added partnerships with other organizations, including the government sector which needs our support. We will establish a clear and strong benefit to our members as an answer to the question, “What’s in it for me?” The Chapter will offer FREE advertising to members on our website; offer highly interesting program speakers that will draw membership; and provide a more effective and needed monthly newsletter with shorter but beneficial information. We are going to hold as the standard of our profession the nationally recognized ASTD certification programs to help establish even greater excellence of our members. We are on the move, and we will be calling all our members over the next 60 days to let them know we want to actively support them going forward.. Our message - It’s a NEW CTASTD and we are here to help.”

National ASTD Coach Visits

Meet Marc Povell. He is part of the new Chapter Leader Community (CLC) of ASTD that is designed to help out the local chapters. Marc recently visited our chapter to help us with our CORE (see on right) requirements and see us through the appointing of our new Chapter President John Cyr.   Marc was impressed with the enthusiasm of the Board members. “Its not at all what I expected. I think John is going add what is needed to get the chapter moving in the right direction.” The chapter’s CORE survey will be completed and sent out to national by January 31st. Marc gave the local leaders some finer points while he was here and helped us all see that the national ASTD is really there to support you like they say they will. Marc can be reached at the following email address:  mpovell@astd.org

Mager and Pipe’s Analyzing Performance Problems is a classic that every trainer should read.  The book leads you through a series of easy steps that will help you understand if training or another approach is the solution to problems of people not doing what they should be doing.  Reviews on Amazon.com indicate why you should have a copy.  For example, “”It’s an entertaining and easy read that helps you identify and tackle just about any performance problem that may come your way” (Justin Beller).  “When you look at human performance, you need to remember that people will usually follow the path of least resistance.  They do not choose a wrong performance because they want to be wrong.  They choose the wrong performance because it is the best solution for them.  Mager and Pipe uncover why people make these choices and offer you a way to achieve the correct performance you seek.” (Ken Myers).  “This book will change how you deal with performance problems of all sorts.  Mager’s step-by-step approach can be used in a broad range of situations, including team environments, manager/employee relationships, production situations, and even with your children!  He makes it easy to see the logical solution that may be evading you” (Ann Grove).  In short, this book is “Highly Recommended.”  If you wish to be a professional trainer, read it if you haven’t already.

The CTASTD WIIFM Principle

So why should you get involved with the CTASTD? Well that’s a fair question. There are different reasons for everyone. If you are a trainer, then you may see the benefits in just networking with people in CT that belong to the same trade as you. As a workplace partner, you may desire an opportunity to speak to and network with some of the best trainers in CT. As an employer you may see a value in access to the largest pool of trainers in CT, or learn what’s new in the field of training.  We consider the benefits for involvement at our Board meetings. To the right you will see some benefits that we have come up with that just might interest you in joining our Chapter. Call us if you have any questions.

What’s In It For Me?

¨ Network at monthly meetings/Get to know important people in your trade

¨ FREE monthly newsletter

¨ Community Status as a certified chapter member

¨ Use of informative website which will contain archives of past newsletters and useful tools

¨ Eventually access to “members only” section of website where critical secure information like membership contact lists will exist

¨ Job Bank and Fee for Service opportunities

¨ FREE ADVERTISING using text or banner ads to sell products, services, or build image

To that end, we are distributing a survey (see below for additional information) to determine your needs and interests and we will be building the chapter's future on your feedback. I can say without a doubt that the CTASTD is a new CTASTD and watch out - we are movin’ now! This newsletter is dedicated to telling you a little about our plans to supercharge the organization. You should plan to reactivate yourself, if you have not done so yet, because the member benefits or the WIIFM has exploded through the roof starting with FREE advertising to members on our website and newsletter. That’s right; we are now going to offer text ads and banner ads to members who want to sell their goods, or services, or build image as a public speaker and more! We have speakers from national ASTD; we have a full slate of monthly programs; we have a new website that far surpasses many of the other 140 chapters which provides you the kind of services that is excepted of Connecticut training professionals. Spend a few minutes and read the rest of this newsletter to see how we plan to win back your loyalty in 2007. I hope you will catch the vision with us as we unite to build a better CTASTD than ever before. Remember, you are CTASTD.—John Cyr
