Look at the topics and speakers we have planned for this year. “Transformative Learning” highlights the importance of reaching hearts when we train others. We will also see how to apply easy ways to measure the results of your training, how to start your own business and find customers, how employers are getting involved in workforce development, and we’ll even have a visit from a genie – “The Success Genie.” Presenters from the Department of Labor and Capital Workforce Partners will be there, and a speaker from ASTD will also be there. Most of all, we need YOU to be there!
I recently spoke to a woman who was extremely frustrated because she had just been laid-off from her job and she needed to mingle with people in her association but could not find anyone to call. She had not been to a meeting in quite a while. She was hurt that no one contacted her right away. To her amazement I told her that is exactly why she needs to be an active member herself because people are relying on her to be there. Her chin dropped. She looked at me in shock for a moment. You see, she had never looked at it that way before; that she might actually be needed to encourage someone else. You see, WE are the association, you and I. We need each other. So make the decision today to get involved, spend just a couple of hours this month to exchange some valuable support with your colleagues in the T&D profession. You could be the answer to someone’s prayer this month. Your words of encouragement, or maybe even a network connection might be all that someone needs to get a kick start and a chance at a new life again. Yes, you are that important!

There is no independence, there is only energy. The void will be filled with yours or someone else’s. Life will go on. I am sure if you try this experiment, you will see what I mean. Stay home from work one day and watch how unplanned activities take over your day. They will arrive like weeds to a garden. Independence? I don’t think so; just displaced energy. Life is made up of all those accumulated moments in time and how you used them. Will we arrive at the dusk of our lives feeling empty because we were not the drivers of our own vehicle, or will we feel content that we have accomplished things? It all has to do with if you are “driven”, or not.
I am a collector of quotes and this one recently came to my attention having to do with independence: "There is often as much independence in not being led, as in not being driven." If you take a few moments to really ponder this bit of 19 th century wisdom by Tyron Edwards, (it took me a few more than that) you may come to the profound understanding I did as to the importance of being a driven person. Consider. Some of us spend so much time and effort in complaining about our bosses at work, our work assignment, and the daily duties of our jobs. We want to be free (we think) of our supervisor’s demands at work when in reality if we were driven there would be little need for supervisors to be demanding. This is true of us as children with our parents, or in our role as spouses, or as partners in a business, or students in school. What it means to me is that there really is no independence at all. We are either servants to others dictates, wishes, plans and so on; or servants to our own plans. Which led me to one of Stephen Covey’s seven habits which is: “Act or be acted upon”. Which would you prefer?

Here is another way to look at it: work is going to get done; you might as well spend your energy doing your work. You have heard it said no doubt “There is no such thing as a free lunch”. Everything has a price. So does not-being-driven. I think what Tyron Edwards’ quote really means for us is that it’s our choice in life how we will spend it. Will we lead or will we allow ourselves to be led. There is just as much energy in both. Here is the reward though if you are driven. You might actually find wealth, or happiness, or love, or the things you set out to accomplish. That is the pleasant by-product. Be driven. It’s the right way to live! You might even have some fun along the way! - John Cyr
We want to thank those of you who responded to our January survey, which was aimed at improving services to members. Results were analyzed during early February. Most respondents were ASTD members who are trainers, although consultants, managers, and educators also replied. All indicated that program topics that interest them are what attracts them to meetings.
Several members pointed out the importance of regular communications, our online services such as the newsletter, and our website. Regarding the latter, one person mentioned that, “In the past I received a great deal of business from advertising on the CTASTD website” – and so a suggestion to those of you in business: make use of this service, which from the beginning of this year is available at no cost to members. - Rich Pfau
Most indicated that Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings (dinner time and happy hour) are the best times to attend programs, and that services important to them are, respectively, our membership directory, monthly programs, the Chapter newsletter, networking at meetings, and our position referral service. Program topic suggestions given for our monthly meetings included Learning Management Systems, eLearning, current trends in the profession, and advanced facilitation and consulting skills. These and other suggestions received are being seriously considered by your Board.
Whether you are working on your own resume or training others on how to do their own, here’s a concept to think about when considering what to include and how to construct the most effective resume you can. If a physical resume there is a record of your work history and your baseline, technical skills. What would go into your invisible resume? What would be included in that invisible resume what would not show up on job applications and maybe even not in the traditional first interview? What would you put in your invisible resume? And as a trainer, what kind of training do you provide that would help your learners identify skills for their own invisible resume?
“An invisible resume, which is just as crucial, goes beyond skills," said Trevor Gandy, Vice President of human resources at Chubb Group of Insurance Cos., based in Warren, N.J. His enthusiasm about having an invisible resume is justified: he invented the term. Gandy, a human resources professional since 1993, says that an invisible resume should be a record of "all those things that aren't on the job posting, such as how you communicate, collaborate with others, meet deadlines and work with various levels of management.” “There is a need for a resume that lists those things that are not the usual skills and accomplishments but are just as important to your success. I called it the invisible resume. Take time to jot down your strengths that go beyond just the baseline skills you have accrued over the years, such as being able to get results through collaboration with others. Your invisible resume is a record of your level of motivation, your efforts to sustain a high performance." The skills that are part of the invisible resume would include all those soft skills, management skills, and interpersonal skills. These are the kinds of things that could come up in a second (or third?) interview, or that might be asked of a former manager/supervisor or a co-worker in the questions which follow-up an interview - in a call to someone on a reference list. “How does this person work? What was this person like to work with?”
Other "invisible" skills that should be listed, Gandy says, include that "you volunteer for important projects, that you're able to deal with various levels of management and that you know how to navigate your way through an organization." Knowing all your abilities, both visible and hidden, "gives you a game plan to begin deeper discussions with your future employer or your current employer, so that they are on the same page as you." We all find ourselves training a younger workforce now that we know will change positions more frequently than the workforce dominated by the baby-boomers. One important aspect of making our training programs valuable, especially to the “younger” learner, is linking the impact of training to the skills they need not only in their present position but also in their future. - Barbara King

About this time of the year, our lists of goals for the year or “New Year’s Resolutions” have migrated their way under a pile of papers on our desk or to the bottom of a desk drawer. Why does this happen every year? What can we do to change this annual event?
